Is It Possible to Grout Over Existing Grout?
The Mechanical Reality of Re-Grouting a Shower Floor
916.600.2009
Q: Is it possible to grout directly over existing grout? I thought that was a guaranteed way to cause a failure?
**A:** It absolutely is a failure if you are trying to apply standard cementitious grout over old grout. Standard grout is not an adhesive—it possesses zero adhesive qualities and cannot stick to itself. It is traditionally designed to fill the entire depth of the tile joint, wrapping around the raw edges of the tile to form a stable **mechanical bond**. Smeared thin over old material, it will immediately flake and wash away.
Q: So what can I safely use to repair or save the floor joints?
**A:** Genuine epoxy grout. True epoxy grout is part reactive resin and part hardener compound—meaning it acts as both a structural filler and an unyielding adhesive. It will form a permanent bond to just about any structurally sound, **CLEAN** surface.
To do this right, we mechanically prep the area by removing the compromised top layer of old grout using specialized utility knives or a variable-speed oscillating tool equipped with a diamond or carbide blade. Once the raw structural joint is deeply cleaned, detail-vacuumed, and fully dried out, the chemical epoxy fill can proceed.
The Advanced Re-Grouting Process in Action
This old shower floor grout was severely eroded and structurally compromised. We completely restored it using high-density premium epoxy grout after intensive mechanical preparation.
Applying premium epoxy grout smoothly over the meticulously prepped joints. Using professional rubber profiling tools allows the resin compound to pack densely into the valleys with absolute precision and near-zero material waste.
The final step requires packing the cross-linked compound tightly, followed by an immediate emulsion wash with specialized white nylon pads and fresh water to eliminate haze. The installation is wiped down with clean microfiber cloths and must remain 100% dry for 24 hours to cure.
Why We Exclusively Deploy Laticrete Spectralock® Pro Premium
For repairs requiring maximum bond strength and waterproofing on a shower floor, we exclusively use **Laticrete Spectralock® Pro Premium 100% Epoxy Grout**. This high-performance, three-component resin system guarantees a stain-proof surface, consistent structural color matching, and a non-porous finish that blocks water from passing down into the subfloor mortar bed. It provides over 30 years of field durability that standard consumer materials can never replicate.
