Why does silicone get moldy in showers? Is there anything I can do to make it last longer?

Trapped water causes mold to grow. What you are looking at is a typical shower with a glass slider enclosure. The bottom channel is usually sealed on both sides with 100% silicone.

How does the area under the channel get wet and cause mold?

Could be a number or reasons

  • there may be gaps where the silicone doesn’t seal off the area completely
  • There may be areas where the channel itself isn’t completely sealed off
  • The pan may have a crack allowing water to seep under the channel

Is there anything I can do to keep water getting under and behind areas that allows mold to grow?

Yes, Keeping your shower professionally cleaned and maintained will extend the life of your shower. Water is one of the biggest enemies in showers and allowing it to dry between uses is key.
