Commercial shower systems experience constant daily use. When plumbing repairs require breaching the tile walls, restoring the underlying waterproofing and mortar substrate correctly is vital to prevent catastrophic wall cavity rot.
The Problem: Exposed Wall Cavity Behind Trim
Ace Plumbing Company was brought in by the facility to replace a leaky commercial shower valve. To cover the rough hole cut out to access the pipes, they installed an oversized, extra-large remodel trim plate. However, removing that plate revealed a massive opening behind it, exposing the wall interior directly to pooling shower water.

Plumbing Inspection & Backing Alignment
Before rebuilding the wall section, the new commercial shower valve assembly was fully checked out for accurate depth placement and clean operation. To establish a secure backing for our structural patch, heavy-duty waterproof tar paper was integrated cleanly into the opening.

Substrate Floating: Lath & Mortar Patching
Next, we custom-cut a piece of heavy metal diamond mesh stucco lath to fit the profile of the opening exactly. To protect internal pipe runs, it was locked into place using an intentional, tight friction pressure-fit—completely avoiding structural nails or screws near the supply lines. Traditional thick-bed mortar mix was then packed and floated perfectly flush with the original thick cement wall bed behind the existing tile.

Flush Tile Repair & Waterproof Seal Completion
Floating the mud base entirely flat allowed the replacement square ceramic tiles to bond smoothly and perfectly level with the surrounding wall. The repair zones were detailed using a premium unsanded white grout block. Once dry, the valve trim plate was securely re-anchored over the structural patch, resulting in an entirely waterproof, professional commercial repair built to withstand heavy daily locker room use.
